Jonathan Jones of the New England Patriots intercepts a ball intended for Tim Patrick of the Denver Broncos during the second half at Gillette Stadium on Oct. 18, 2020, in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The New England Patriots faced off against the Denver Broncos a week later than expected due to players testing positive for COVID-19. Although they ultimately lost 18-12, a bright spot for the team was cornerback Jonathan Jones, shown here intercepting a pass intended for Tim Patrick of the Denver Broncos. Jones’ performance left the usually tight-lipped Patriots coach Bill Belichick impressed, who called the interception, ‘an outstanding play on the ball.’

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 88 ChevyGoods.com/Truck Hero Chevrolet pits during the NASCAR Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway on Oct. 18, 2020, in Kansas City, Kansas.

NASCAR is always exciting to shoot because it involves a lot of bright colors and a lot of speed. With so many races throughout the season, it’s challenging to try to capture something out-of-the-ordinary. As motorsport photographers, we are always searching for new and different angles to both challenge ourselves and so that the images don’t become stale. Looking back from the outside position in turn 4 during the NASCAR Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400 at the Kansas Speedway this past weekend, I noticed the graphic quality of all the pit signs stacked up. I waited for a car to come into the pits and shot the photo with a 500mm lens which compresses the pit signs that run the length of pit row. The result was this image that shows both the action of the crew members and the color found within the sport.

Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers catches a fly ball at the wall on a hit by Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves during the fifth inning in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at Globe Life Field on Oct. 18, 2020, in Arlington, Texas.

When covering baseball, I try to listen to the sounds of the game: the crack of the bat, footsteps on the bases and umpires making calls. When I heard the sound of the ball off of Freddie Freeman’s bat, I knew it was headed for deep right field, where Mookie Betts had been stealing base hits from the Braves for the last six games of the series. Plays like this happen in an instant, so timing is everything. That goes not only for the photographer but also for the player and Bett’s timing was perfect on this play as he scaled the wall and robbed what looked to be a home run.
