White Sox keeping quiet about Tony La Russa is unacceptable

The White Sox aren’t commenting on Tony La Russa

La Russa made the wrong impression on White Sox fans earlier this week, as it was revealed the Hall of Fame skipper was arrested for DUI just one day before he was hired as manager in his second stint on the south side. The entire process was an embarrassing display, as La Russa flaunted his Hall of Fame status, hoping that the arresting officer would be influenced by his prestige.

The hire of La Russa, who is 76 years old as of October, was already criticized, as the team passed on several younger, qualified candidates who perhaps would’ve held more weight on a younger team. Instead, the White Sox hired a veteran in every sense of the word.

Why are the White Sox so quiet on this issue?

First off, if the election taught us anything, it’s that counting on Maricopa County for appropriate timing is a mistake. At this rate, the White Sox statement won’t come before Spring Training. Second, it’s fair to say La Russa wasn’t conducting himself in a way fit for an MLB manager, especially one of Hall of Fame caliber.

The White Sox evidently knew all about La Russa’ gaff, and decided to hire him anyway. Jerry Reinsdorf is convinced that La Russa is the right man for the job, and won’t be convinced otherwise.

Offering no explanation or reassurance to fans, though, gives off the wrong message. Surely, the White Sox must know how this look. It’s a stain on a franchise many assume is rapidly ascending to contention. Yet, hiring the wrong manager can set a team back three years, at least. Chicago cannot afford such transgressions, and hiring a man who allegedly opted to drink and drive one day before he was hired as manager isn’t a good look.

A comment, any comment, would be appreciated.
