Jose Abreu had a touching statement after being named American League MVP
The American League MVP voting was revealed Thursday and Chicago White Sox star Jose Abreu took home the honors for the first time in his career. This was a well-deserved award, especially during such an unorthodox season.
He released a statement following the award win and his words expressed how much this all meant to him and also shed light onto what the game of baseball is all about.

Ultimately, baseball is a game. Those talented enough to play at the MLB level become stars and are paid as such. Abreu saying his mom now has a true MVP digs into the heart of adults playing the beautiful game.
The White Sox star took home the award in a close race with Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez. But Abreu’s statement showed that no matter what he was going to be humble the entire time. All he could think to do was thank everyone around him.
Abreu is part of the core in Chicago that has White Sox fans excited about what is to come. Not even the bizarre hiring of Tony La Russa can spoil that. He is a three-time All-Star and likely would have added another appearance to the list if there was an All-Star Game in 2020.
He played in all 60 games this season, leading the league in hits, RBIs, and managed to launch 19 home runs. His WAR of 2.8 beat out the marks he posted in each of the past two seasons and he was rewarded for the great play.
The 2020 MLB season was by far the most unique in recent memory. Still, someone like Abreu put his head down, got to work, and was able to power through to receive recognition for his great play. The game brought joy and hope into the homes of fans all over the baseball-viewing world and Abreu’s statement shows he is happy to do his part.
