It would be in the best interest of the Phillies to re-sign JT Realmuto.
Of course, it’ll cost them. Realmuto is expected to command a hefty multi-year contract that’ll rival the most ever given to a catcher, a record previously held by Joe Mauer. Realmuto has proven he can do it all behind the plate. While he’s not the most gifted defensive catcher, he’s not a liability, and can be a legitimate threat in the middle of a lineup. He’s the best player at his position in the majors, hands down.
If the Phillies truly wish to build a contender around Bryce Harper, it starts with Realmuto. But reports thus far out of MLB free agency suggest they’re willing to let him walk, despite having traded the likes of Sixto Sanchez to the Marlins for his services just a few short years ago.
The Phillies signed a catcher on Wednesday, just not Realmuto
The Phillies hedged their bets on Wednesday by signing Realmuto’s backup, catcher Andrew Knapp, to a one-year deal.
Knapp is a fine backup who can play about once a week if called upon. Perhaps one day he’ll prove he has starting potential. That day is not today, sorry.
The Phillies competitive window will slam shut if they let Realmuto out of their grasp. They have enough holes to fill in their infield and bullpen, and adding catcher to that list is unwise. This is especially the case when forced to replace the very best at that position, which is what the Phillies are flirting with at this very moment.
