The San Francisco Giants could look to make some sneaky additions this offseason.

The NL West is quickly becoming one of the toughest divisions in baseball, and the San Francisco Giants know that they have to spend some money this offseason if they want to avoid getting left behind.

While signing Matt Wisler to beef up the bullpen and bringing back Kevin Gausman is a good start, the Giants can’t just stop there. If they sign these three free agents while avoiding one potential disaster, they could start building the foundation of a team that could challenge the Dodgers in the future.

The San Francisco Giants should sign these three free agents, but avoid one big name

Odorizzi never took the leap to stardom expected in Tampa Bay, but he finally started to show how he can be a quality No. 2 or No. 3 starter when he ended up in Minnesota, as he posted a 3.51 ERA on a Twins team that won the Central. 2020, however, was a bit of a wash, as injuries made appearances few and far between last season. The Giants have been interested in him as a buy-low candidate this offseason, as there is reason to believe moving to a pitchers’ park like San Francisco could help him rediscover the form that made him so lethal under Rocco Baldelli in Minnesota.

The Gausman signing is a nice deal for the Giants, but former All-Star Johnny Cueto is starting to look less like a star with each passing day. as of right now, a Giants farm system that is generally bereft of elite pitching talent would likely force a few relative unknowns to eat up hundreds of innings for Gabe Kapler. If Odorizzi works, they can benefit from having pilfered a No. 2 starters at a discounted price. If he stinks, the financial burden he places on the team won’t be anything insurmountable.
