Kolten Wong is cool with Adam Wainwright going back to the St. Louis Cardinals, but that is about it.
Free agent second baseman Kolten Wong applauded the St. Louis Cardinals bringing back aging veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright on a one-year deal Thursday.
Wong tweeted out that he was happy Wainwright will not be going to another MLB in the twilight of his career. He also tweeted he was not thrilled with what the Redbirds’ front office has done this winter. While he wants the Cardinals to re-sign veteran future Baseball Hall of Fame backstop Yadier Molina, Wong remains an unrestricted free agent entering the final days of January, too.
If the Cardinals run it back, they should win the NL Central division crown
While it has been a frustrating offseason for Cardinals fans, they do have a team certainly capable of winning the NL Central next year. With teams like the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds expected to pull back and the Pittsburgh Pirates being in a full-blown rebuild, the 2021 NL Central winner will likely either be the Cardinals or the Milwaukee Brewers. St. Louis must take advantage.
Though Molina and Wainwright are in their very late 30s, Wong is still very much in his baseball-playing prime. Because St. Louis missed out on signing DJ LeMahieu in his free agency, this leaves the door wide open for the Cardinals to bring back Wong on a new contract. Should he and Molina return with Wainwright, St. Louis would have to be the early frontrunner to win the NL Central.
St. Louis’ slim championship window is rapidly closing, so the Cardinals need to be all-in on 2021.
