The Rockies traded away Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals and are sending a small fortune in cash as well.
Colorado Rockies fans are in a bad place right now. The team just traded Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals two years after signing him to an eight-year extension.
Arenado was supposed to be the face of the team and instead came up in trade talks almost immediately after signing his extension. Now he is officially gone, and it was also reported that the Rockies are sending about $50 million to the Cardinals as well. This is a large sum of money and is actually more than they have spent on a free agent in quite some time.
Rockies fans have a right to be angry
Wade Davis signed a three-year, $52 million deal with the Rockies before the 2018 season. He played the worst baseball of his career with Colorado and was released before the end of the 2020 season.
Spending big on free agents doesn’t appear to be in the plans. Ownership sending $50 million to St. Louis along with the franchise cornerstone is just a slap in the face to fans.
Now Trevor Story remains as the face of the franchise and is set to be a free agent next offseason. Fans are now left wondering if he is going to be traded before then as the Rockies don’t seem committed to winning at this point.
Arenado reached the MLB level with the Rockies in 2013. From 2013-20, the team made the postseason only twice and the highlight of his tenure was a Wild Card Game win over the Chicago Cubs in 2018.
The team was so ready to trade Arenado they sent $50 million to St. Louis to complete the deal. That money could have been used to help the team win now. Instead, fans will begin wondering who will be traded next.
