3 players Rockies should trade now to jump start rebuild

The Rockies may as well start trading top talent now and go all-in on a rebuild after the events of the past few months.

The Colorado Rockies had a true superstar on the roster in Nolan Arenado. He signed an eight-year extension and it looked like a strong core was in place. Then the Rockies traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals this past offseason and even sent $50 million to help pay his salary.

The trade was a disaster for the Rockies and that has led to GM Jeff Bridich stepping down from his role. There appears to be a lack of direction with the organization and there are several players on the roster who may no longer fit into the future plans.

Colorado should finally commit to a full rebuild after trading away Arenado by making a few deals with three other veterans on the roster.

Jon Gray

Pitcher Trade Value: B

Jon Gray made his Rockies debut in 2015 and has been a regular in the rotation since. However, injuries have been a problem at times. He is now set to hit free agency following the season and it would be a shock if the team is set on bringing him back on a new deal at the age of 30.

He seems like an obvious trade candidate at this point. Gray’s stock should also be up after a nice start to the 2021 season. He has a 2.54 ERA through five starts after a terrible 2020 season in which he had a 6.69 ERA in his eight starts.

Gray is a veteran with experience who also boasts a career 9.1 K/9. The Rockies are in arguably the toughest division in baseball and are already off to a last-place, 9-14 start. He is no longer a building block and should be an intriguing piece as a rental for a team in need of a starter.
