The New York Yankees’ injury woes are only getting worse with designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton scratched from Friday’s game against the Orioles.
Just when things were starting to look up for the Yankees in the W-L column a new wave of injuries has thrown the club out of whack.
An hour before Friday’s game with the Orioles, New York scratched Giancarlo Stanton with left quad tightness.
The lineup is looking less than ideal to start a new series.
Injuries and illness have ravaged the Yankees lineup
The Yankees are already dealing with enough availability issues across the organization. Gleyber Torres and eight staff members, including three coaches, have tested positive for COVID-19. The shortstop will be out until at least May 24 unless he is able to produce multiple negative tests while remaining asymptomatic.
Rougned Odor may be close to a return, but New York may have to wait until after the Baltimore series to get him back, per Marly Rivera of ESPN. He may not play again until the Yankees return home against the White Sox on May 21.
The injury for Stanton could also put a pin in Aaron Boone’s plan to possibly use Stanton as cover for Aaron Hicks in the outfield. Hicks is on the injured list with a torn tendon in his wrist. That ailment may require surgery and a lengthy absence.
So while Stanton’s issue doesn’t seem serious at this point, it’s another kick in the shin for a team with plenty of other things to worry about.
New York had won four in a row before Thursday night’s 9-1 defeat to end the Tampa Bay series. At 20-17, the Yankees lead the Rays in the AL East standings. However, they’re still behind the Blue Jays and Red Sox for supremacy in the division.
