Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper took major issue with Sean Newcomb nearly blasting him in the head.
Whenever the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves meet, you know there’s going to be plenty of intrigue in the showdown. Such was the case on Tuesday night, with the two teams facing off under the bright lights at Citizens Bank Park.
Before things wrapped up, though, Bryce Harper was furious, and understandably so. That’s because a pitch got away from Atlanta hurler Sean Newcomb and it came oh-so-close to hitting Harper right in the head.
Bryce Harper was furious with Sean Newcomb in the Philadelphia vs. Atlanta game
As you can see in the clip above, a Newcomb delivery indeed got away from him and it was headed straight for Harper’s helmet. He was able to get away from it at the last second, but he flew to the ground in the process.
Harper was visibly shaken and upset. Keep in mind, Harper went yard earlier in the game, but he did so in a manner that probably has Chicago White Sox skipper Tony La Russa shaking his head. In the bottom of the fourth, with Philly down 3-1, Harper went yard on that 3-0 count. You throw him the ball right down Main Street like that and he’s sure to make you pay.
Not to assume, but Harper probably figured the Braves decided to throw at him because of his 3-0 blast. With that mentality, it’s no wonder that he was irate with how things shaped out here. Again, whenever Atlanta and Philadelphia do battle, there’s going to be some animosity, as the two NL East clubs aren’t big fans of one another. We’ll see if there’s some more fireworks when they square off on Wednesday.
