Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola made MLB history with 10 straight strikeouts.
Few people are having a better start to their weekend than Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola.
Against the New York Mets at Citi Field on Friday, Nola threw a staggering 12 strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. But what was even more remarkable was that 10 of those strikeouts came in a row, making MLB history in the process.
That’s right; Nola just tied Tom Seaver (1970) for the most consecutive strikeouts in MLB history (10). The streak was broken when Pete Alonso got a double, but tying an incredible record like this is still quite an accomplishment.
Aaron Nola makes history with Phillies
At 34-37, the Phillies could use some happy news wherever they can get it, and Nola’s incredible start to Friday’s game certainly qualifies. Despite their 13-23 record on the road this season, Philadelphia held a 1-0 lead over the Mets heading into the top of the seventh inning, thanks in no small part to Nola’s red-hot performance. He only surrendered two hits and zero runs on the mound.
The Phillies are third in the NL East, trailing the Washington Nationals by 3.5 games and the Mets by 5.0 games. Heading into Friday’s game in New York, Nola had a 5-4 record, throwing 95 strikeouts in 85 innings with an ERA of 4.22 and a WHIP of 1.22.
Suffice it to say the Phillies will be hoping to see much more of that Aaron Nola as they try to make up ground in the NL East.
