The New York Yankees have reportedly already sent a trade offer to the Colorado Rockies for shortstop Trevor Story.
If there are two things consistent about the New York Yankees this season, it is their inconsistency and their propensity to lose games in heartbreaking fashion. Even after their latest debacle that was Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees are still 3.5 games behind the Oakland Athletics for the second Wild Card spot in the American League as of Monday night. For those Yankees fans hoping they would sell at Friday’s trade deadline, this latest report says otherwise.
According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees have made a trade offer to the Colorado Rockies for shortstop Trevor Story, but it is unknown if any traction has been made. Additionally, Heyman notes that the Rockies have not “definitively decided to trade him.”

The thing with Story is that he is set to hit free agency at the end of this season, and joins fellow shortstops in Carlos Correa, Corey Seager and Javier Baez looking for massive deals this upcoming offseason. That is due to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Francisco Lindor earning long-term contract extensions worth well over $300 million last offseason. Taking that into consideration, the Rockies would be wise to flip him ahead or at Friday’s deadline to ensure they get some sort of return instead of watching Story walk to free agency for nothing.
This season, Story is slashing .242/.313/.425 while recording 12 home runs, 46 RBI, 45 runs scored and 77 hits.
By acquiring Story, the Yankees can put him at shortstop as they make a push for a postseason berth. That will allow them to put Gleyber Torres back at second base, where he has performed much better defensively earlier in his career, and D.J. LeMahieu at first base. That creates a much more ideal infield for the final stretch of the season.
Will acquiring Story significantly increase the Yankees chances of contending this season? Who knows, but the Yankees sure do feel it will based off this latest report.
