Fernando Tatis Jr. lands on 10-day injured list with left shoulder ailment

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday after hurting his left shoulder the day prior.

The San Diego Padres were just hours removed from the MLB trade deadline, and they saw star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. clutch his arm after sliding into third base during Friday’s game against the Colorado Rockies. One day later, the Padres have made an announcement regarding the health status of Tatis.

On Saturday, the Padres announced that they have placed Tatis on the 10-day injured list due to left shoulder inflammation.

Immediately following the game, Padres manager Jayce Tingler revealed that the shortstop suffered a partial dislocation of his left shoulder during his slide, via Dennis Lin of The Athletic. He underwent an MRI on Saturday morning, which revealed that he was dealing with “left shoulder instability and inflammation.” He will be re-evaluated after 10 days.

Tatis suffered a similar injury back on April 5, where he fell to the ground in pain following a swing attempt against the San Francisco Giants. Even though the injury looked severe, Tatis returned after a 10-day stint on the injury list.

Through 87 games this season, Tatis is slashing .292/.373/.651 while recording 31 home runs, 70 RBI, 78 runs scored, 92 hits and 23 stolen bases.

With Tatis out, the Padres will lean upon Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth to fill in in the short-term. Kim entered Friday’s game to replace Tatis after he suffered the aforementioned shoulder injury. On Saturday, Cronenworth shifted over from second base to start at short, while trade deadline acquisition Adam Frazier started at second.

For now, all the Padres can do is play the waiting game to see how Tatis feels before taking their next steps.
