The Atlanta Braves have released Shane Greene after he was designated for assignment.
While the Atlanta Braves wish things could have gotten better, they released struggling relief pitcher Shane Greene on Saturday afternoon he was designated for assignment earlier in the week.
Greene cleared waivers on Saturday, meaning he is free to sign anywhere. In 19 appearances for the Braves this season, Greene posted an absolutely dreadful 8.47 ERA and 1.824 WHIP in only 17 innings pitched. He had been a huge trade deadline acquisition for the club back in 2019. However, his departure from the Braves organization admits it was a mistake to bring him back this season.
The Braves are tied for first place in the NL East standings with the Philadelphia Phillies at 60-56.

While the Braves bullpen has been markedly better since the early part of July, the relief corps’ struggles have been well-documented. It is not just Greene who has struggled on the mound for Atlanta. Braves Country has no confidence when Will Smith enters the game in save situations. Every time Sean Newcomb toed the rubber, it was essentially Brian Snitker admitting defeat.
Fortunately for the Braves, Luke Jackson has been strong all season long. Tyler Matzek has pitched very well in recent weeks. The addition of Richard Rodriguez to the bullpen in a trade deadline deal this year with the Pittsburgh Pirates has been a huge plus. All the while, the Braves are playing baseball at a level on-par with what has allowed them win the last three NL East division crowns.
Greene must find a new MLB team to stick with now that the Braves are officially done with him.
