Minnesota Twins, New York Mets

MLB trade deadline: This Mets-Twins deal offers perfect Jacob deGrom insurance

The New York Mets need some Jacob deGrom insurance after the ace was sent to the injured list again with a forearm issue.

With deGrom on the mend yet again, the Mets could use another starter, let’s call him a co-ace, to carry the pitching staff when necessary. Minnesota Twins hurler Jose Berrios could fill that void.

Berrios will cost a pretty penny, especially considering he has several years left on his contract. FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray laid it out perfectly, speculating that Berrios would be a good fit in Queens.

“The Mets have been active in looking for starting pitchers, even before deGrom’s injury, according to major-league sources. If his injury is serious and requires an extended absence, they could go all-in on Minnesota Twins starter Jose Berrios. Even if deGrom is on the IL for a short time, they could pursue a pitcher such as Colorado Rockies righty Jon Gray, who has a 3.68 in 93 innings this season.”

MLB rumors: Could the New York Mets trade for Jose Berrios?

Berrios has a 3.69 ERA on the season, paired with a 1.081 WHIP. He’s just 27 years old and hits arbitration in 2022.

So, what would a potential trade look like? It would be costly for the Mets.

Mets Get

SP, Jose Berrios

Twins Get

SS, Ronny Mauricio

RHP, Jose Butto

RHP, Yennsy Diaz

Mauricio is a steep price to pay. He’s just 20 years old and the Mets second-best prospect per MLB pipeline, but his path to the majors is currently blocked by some guy named Francisco Lindor. With their shortstop of the future already signed long-term, Mauricio becomes easy trade bat.

Butto and Diaz, also ranked in the Mets top-30 prospects, offer the Twins some pitching help in their system. Both could pitch at the MLB level, while Diaz has already made an early impact in Queens.
