St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon and catcher Yadier Molina got into a heated conversation during Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets.
The St. Louis Cardinals may not be in contention for the NL Central title, but they are tied with the San Diego Padres for the second NL Wild Card spot entering Tuesday night. The team can ill afford to make any mistake if they want to make a trip to the postseason.
During St. Louis’ game against the New York Mets, Cardinals pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon and veteran catcher Yadier Molina appeared to have gotten into a disagreement. The conversation became heated to the point where members of the Cardinals had to separate the two in the dugout.

Ponce de Leon entered in the bottom of the fifth inning in relief of Jake Woodford with a 2-2 tie, and had far from the greatest performance. After he forced Tomas Nido to ground out, Ponce de Leon issued three consecutive walks, with a wild pitch thrown in between. After being replaced by Kodi Whitley, the Mets took a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly by Michael Conforto. The Cardinals got out of the inning after Whitley struck out Pete Alonso.
The Cardinals did retake the lead on a two-run home run by outfielder Tyler O’Neill. However, the Mets tied things up in the bottom of the ninth inning on a solo home run by second baseman Javy Baez, sending the game into extra innings. The Cardinals ultimately won 7-6 after 11 innings of play.
Entering Tuesday’s game, Ponce de Leon carried a 6.00 ERA, a 1.545 WHIP and a 2-9 win-loss record while striking out 24 batters and walking 19 through 23 games (33.0 innings). As for Molina, he as slashing .257/.301/.385 while recording 11 home runs and 60 RBI through 109 games prior to Tuesday’s contest in New York.
The two obviously had a disagreement on what took place on the field, and everyone watching the game got to see it.
