MLB suspends Mike Wright for throwing at Shohei Ohtani

MLB put their foot down on Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Mike Wright for throwing at Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani.

Throw at the potential AL MVP three straight times, expect a suspension. It’s not that tough to comprehend.

Ohtani is likely to edge out Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. for AL MVP honors, but he faced a serious threat from Wright just a few days ago, as he had three straight pitches thrown at his feet. Wright and White Sox manager Tony La Russa claimed it wasn’t intentional.

Wright was ejected, and so was La Russa shortly thereafter for arguing. Whether the pitches were on purpose or not, throwing Wright out to protect a player of Ohtani’s status isn’t necessarily surprising.

MLB suspended Mike Wright for throwing at Shohei Ohtani

It would appear MLB believes Wright threw at Ohtani intentionally, despite what he and his manager had to say.

“They made a mistake. It’s upsetting. It looks bad for our pitcher, our team and me,” La Russa said postgame per James Fegan of The Athletic.

It’s tough to deny three straight pitches at Ohtani’s feet. It looks sketchy, and the umpires were purely acting on instinct. If Wright didn’t mean to throw those pitches there, then he’s a danger to others on the mound and ought to be removed anyway.
