Derek Hill taken off in wheelchair after violent injury at first base (Video)

Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill was taken off the field by wheelchair after a collision with Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Ji-Man Choi.

A completely innocent play turned violent when Choi was forced off the bag to make a play, and collided with Hill down the first-base line. The Detroit Tigers outfielder seems likely to miss the rest of the regular season due to the extent of his knee injury.

The Tigers would go on to win the game, but the outcome felt rather meaningless for Detroit, which is already far removed from playoff competition. Rather, Hill’s well-being is the central concern here.

Detroit Tigers: Derek Hill injury update

Hill had just been activated off the injured list after another tough injury at the hands of his own teammates, Akil Baddoo, due to a collision.

“He got banged up pretty good at first base,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “They were concerned about his left knee. I think he hyper-extended it. We weren’t even going to waste time trying to walk him off the field. We’ll do the tests that we always do and check him out fully. It was an unfortunate play to say the least.”

Hill will receive a look from the training staff before a decision is made on his future. We’ll update you when we have more information.
