Marvel brings superheroes to diamond, partners with Minor League Baseball

Minor League Baseball announced a three-year partnership with the Marvel superhero brand, introducing themed jerseys for all 96 MiLB teams.

During playoff season, MLB fans are reminded of the immense heroics always present in the sport. Freddie Freeman became an Atlanta hero when he clinched a second NLCS berth for the Braves, while Christian Vasquez sent Fenway Park into a frenzy when his walk-off home run in Game 3.

But in Minor League Baseball, there will be real superheroes coming to the league next season — real Marvel superheroes, anyway.

In a recent announcement, MiLB officially announced a three-year partnership deal with Marvel Entertainment in a campaign titled “Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond.”

“MiLB’s new partnership with Marvel Entertainment brings together two storied brands who create memories that are passed down from generation to generation,” said Kurt Hunzeker, Major League Baseball’s Vice President of Minor League Business Operations. “The possibilities with this partnership are endless and we look forward to some incredibly creative content, merchandise and promotions.”

Minor League Baseball teams up with Marvel Entertainment for superhero-themed MiLB games

The Minor League is the latest sports league to infuse sports games with the whimsy of superheroes. In May 2021, ESPN and Marvel — both of which are owned by Walt Disney — debuted the first-ever Marvel-inspired “NBA Special Edition.”

The NFL has had a similar collaboration with Nickelodeon, resulting in a Spongebob-themed NFL game.

The MiLB is thrilled about their own Marvel partnership, which will involve all 96 MiLB teams between the 2022 and 2024 seasons. Each team will have an opportunity to sport Marvel-themed jerseys during the partnership.

The fans will get to join in on the superhero fun too: Marvel will create a comic book that will be distributed in participating ballparks throughout the partnership. Co-branded merchandise and other surprises will be announced in 2022.
