MLB Free Agency, New York Yankees

Anthony Rizzo family member provides clue of free agent plans

It sounds like Anthony Rizzo might have enjoyed his time in New York enough to stay with the Yankees.

The New York Yankees made a move at the trade deadline to bring Anthony Rizzo over from the Chicago Cubs in order to make a run at the postseason. They made it to the wild card game, where they were bounced by the rival Boston Red Sox.

Since then, Rizzo’s name has not come up on the free agent hot stove very much. When it comes to available first basemen, it’s a three-horse race between Rizzo, Freddie Freeman, and Brandon Belt. Freeman is still playing with the Atlanta Braves, who made it to their first World Series since 1999. It’s probable that this is holding up the market on Rizzo and Belt as we wait to see if Freeman returns to Atlanta or tests the waters.

However, we have received a possible update on where Rizzo stands with his status.

Would the Yankees consider a move to bring Rizzo back to the Bronx?

Rizzo batted .249 in his 49 games with the Bronx Bombers. He was also 1-4 with a home run in the team’s wild card loss to the Red Sox. The Yankees would have some decisions to make if they do decide to bring him back, seeing as they just last year signed first baseman DJ LeMahieu to a six year/$90 million deal. He is batting .307 as a Yankee.

Other possible destinations for 32-year-old Rizzo could start with going back to the Cubs, where he served as an unofficial captain and is still an indisputable hero in Chicago. He also might consider the Miami Marlins, who play near his hometown and where he spends his offseason time.

As we play the waiting game with Rizzo and the rest of the free agent class, a new Collective Bargaining Agreement still looms over everything and could delay some big moves being made.
