Boston Red Sox, MLB Free Agency, New York Yankees

Could Yankees, Red Sox rivalry heat up over Trevor Story?

Both the Red Sox and Yankees need a shortstop, with New York far more desperate for middle infield help. Could Trevor Story be the answer?

With MLB in a lockout, neither the Yankees nor the Red Sox can find much of a solution to those woes. Boston, for one, has an All-Star at the position in Xander Bogaerts, though they’d prefer to transition him to one of the corner infield position as he ages.

The Yankees, meanwhile, entered the offseason with grand plans (at least for fans) to sign one of Carlos Correa or Corey Seager. The Rangers signed Seager to a massive 10-year deal before the lockout, taking him off the market. Correa remains, though he’ll likely want something north of the $320-plus million that Seager received. Brian Cashman can’t like that.

So, what’s the answer? Trevor Story remains, and he’s far more affordable.

MLB rumors: Will Yankees or Red Sox sign Trevor Story?

Neither Boston nor New York have been directly connected with Story, per say, especially during the lockout, as players and agents aren’t talking with teams.

But several reports have indicated that Story would be interested in taking a one-year prove it deal, and where would be better to do so than Boston or New York? Both would get him plenty of exposure, and both have the means to give him the long-term deal he seeks should he play up to his lofty standards.

The Yankees have looming extension talks with Aaron Judge, and already have a ton of money devoted to Giancarlo Stanton and Gerrit Cole. Adding Story for an affordable price is a dream for Cashman.

For the Red Sox, the potential of adding another high-caliber defender and bat to their infield is too important to pass up, and you know Chaim Bloom will take on that challenge at the right price.
