Boston Red Sox prospect Alex Binelas probably has the best nickname in every level of baseball.

There are some solid nicknames across every professional and collegiate sports league. When it comes to baseball, a new prospect of the Boston Red Sox probably has everyone beat.

Alex Binelas joined the Red Sox after the team acquired him from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Hunter Renfroe-Jackie Bradley Jr. trade. According to the Boston Globe’s piece on him, Binelas earned the nickname “Leonidas,” based actor Gerard Butler’s character in the film 300. He earned that moniker when he played for the University of Louisville due to his thick beard.

Red Sox fans, you have one job if Binelas ever gets a call-up — keep the “Leonidas” nickname alive.

As mentioned earlier, Binelas was brought over to Boston alongside Bradley and fellow prospect David Hamilton in exchange for Renfroe. Binelas was just drafted by the Brewers in the third round of this year’s MLB Draft. Binelas possesses tremendous power, as evidenced by his numbers throughout college and the minor leagues.

Through his three seasons at Louisville, Binelas slashed .272/.363/.608 while recording 33 home runs, 123 RBI and 111 hits in 111 games.

In 36 games between the Rookie and Single-A levels , Binelas posted a .309 batting average, a .390 on-base percentage and a .583 slugging percentage while recording nine home runs, 29 RBI, 33 runs scored and 43 hits.

Red Sox fans will certainly keep their eyes peeled for Binelas’ performance in the minors to see if he will receive a call-up in the near future.
