The New York Yankees should consider signing former Boston Red Sox utility-man Brock Holt once the lockout ends.
Holt would be a proper fit in just about any system, as he can play multiple positions. For a New York team that needs that sort of flexibility, Holt would make for a hot commodity off the bench, or even in a starting role should he be called upon due to injury.
Let’s face it — the Yankees aren’t paying big money for a top free agent. Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman aren’t walking through that door unless Hal Steinbrenner suddenly has a change of heart. So, considering the money Brian Cashman has to work with, why not go after a player like Holt, who will likely be an afterthought once free agency starts back up again?

Not to mention, signing Holt means he won’t be a Boston Red Sox, which always ends poorly for the Yankees. Look no further than 2019.
Holt hasn’t been the same since he left the Red Sox, splitting time with the Milwaukee Brewers, Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers. In that span, he slashed .211/.283/.274 in 2020 and .209/.281/.298 in 2021.
Needless to say, they could simply provide Holt with a spring training invite and no guaranteed money, and that could work out for the best. Either Holt shows out in the spring, thus earning a big-league contract, or the Yankees release him at little to no cost. If Holt were to somehow return to Boston, odds are it would somehow come back to bite New York. Need a reminder?
