Trevor Story is expected to sign with one of these teams soon: the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Minnesota Twins, and the San Francisco Giants.
One of the major remaining free agents, Trevor Story has four teams of his choosing: the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, and two others, according to Jon Heyman.
Two factors make these rumors especially interesting: Story is “prioritizing winning” and open to changing positions, which opens up the possibilities of where he could sign.
As the decision hangs in the air, here are the four teams Story is expected to choose from this afternoon.
Red Sox rumors: Why Trevor Story makes sense
Everything Story could want with the Red Sox is there: they’re a perennial playoff contender in a stacked AL East, and they’ve currently got an opening.
The Sox are interested in Story, but there’s a catch: he’ll have to make a move to second base to accommodate current Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts. But that may not be a deterrent, considering that Heyman noted he is open to a position change.
A short-term deal putting winning above all else, no matter the position? It’s likely Story could sign in Boston.
Blue Jays rumors: Why Trevor Story makes sense
Another strong AL East team, Story could be the reason the Blue Jays make the playoffs next year. An infield with Vlad Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Story would be formidable, and it’s possible Story could replicate what Marcus Semien accomplished in Toronto in 2021.
Semien took a one-year deal worth $18 million to reestablish his value, which paid in dividends when he signed with the Texas Rangers for $175 million. If Story does the same, the Blue Jays may be able to have story carry on what Semien brought to Toronto.
As with many of the contending teams, there is no wide-open shortstop position to claim, but perhaps the Blue Jays and Story can still work something out.
Twins rumors: Why Trevor Story makes sense
The Twins finished dead last in the AL Central with a 73-89 record, but they do have something none of these other teams can offer: a clear availability at shortstop, which is Story’s preferred position.
The Twins have also been suspiciously busy in trades over the past week, including a trade that sent shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson to the New York Yankees. With that, the Twins cleared $41 million off the books, which could be the money they use to pay Story.
The only team with a clear opening, Story could sign in Minnesota with the ability to play at shortstop and make a lot of money doing it, although it’s unclear whether or not their offseason additions will be enough to have the Twins become a playoff contender overnight. If Story wants to do what he loves and get paid a lot doing it with the potential to win, Minnesota is his best bet—but he has better chances making the playoffs elsewhere.
Giants rumors: Why Trevor Story makes sense
Even though it ended on a sour note, the San Francisco Giants had a historic 107-win season in 2021—and that’s saying something in the NL West.
The Giants have already made plenty of offseason splash by signing Joc Pederson, and even though Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said he felt the position player group was essentially set, he did say he remained open-minded about further acquisitions.
Heyman’s tweet mentions the Giants by name, and once again, this team meets Story’s criteria. The Giants were the best regular-season team last year, and they have perhaps the biggest need at second base.
There’s opportunity at second with reps at shortstop and third, which would make Story a clutch player who virtually remains on the field at all times. While the Red Sox rumors are loud, the Giants might be the ones to quietly steal away Story with a compelling case for building a resume and winning it all.
