The Chicago Cubs did unspeakable things to the Pittsburgh Pirates in Saturday’s 21-0 blowout.
Look at those Chicago Cubs scoring 21 unanswered runs on the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley.
In a game whose box score closely resembled that of a low-scoring football game, Chicago topped Pittsburgh in a historically lopsided affair. Amazingly, of the 21 runs the Cubs scored, only three came by way of the big fly. Outside of Alfonso Rivas’ three-run bomb in the second inning, the Cubs’ 18 other runs were a result of the ball staying within the confines of the Friendly Confines.
As the late Harry Caray would have said had he been calling this unforgettable one, “Holy Cow!”

Had this been an NFL game, Chicagoland would have been over the moon, as Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears would have stuck it to Mitch Trubisky and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Too bad the Bears offense will struggle to score 21 points in most games during Matt Eberflus’ first year on the job. For now, the Dave Wannstedt low-scoring fever dream is merely that and nothing more.
What this game signifies is two things. Maybe the Cubs rebuild of sorts will only be short-lived? They may have gotten off to a hot start last year, but this rebuild may not be anywhere near as painful as the one that led up to the 2016 World Series. As for the Pirates, they continue to be the dreck of the National League. At least Pittsburgh has the Steelers and the Penguins to root for…
While this is only one game of 162 for both teams, the end result is one that neither party is going to forget for a long time. When the Cubs’ bats eventually go cold, they will have wished they could have saved a few runs from this rout of the Buccos. As for Pittsburgh, if this is not rock bottom, what is, honestly? May their future be infinitely brighter than the dark abyss of Davy Jones’ locker.
