Tyler Mahle trade details: Twins add to rotation in a big way

The Minnesota Twins were able to add to their starting rotation, adding Tyler Mahle in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cincinnati Reds were one of the biggest sellers at this year’s trade deadline. They got a haul from the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Luis Castillo. They moved outfielder Tyler Naquin and pitcher Phillip Diehl to the New York Mets. One big piece still remaining on the Reds that carried plenty of trade value was starter Tyler Mahle. With over two hours remaining, the Reds found a taker for Mahle.

Cincinnati is trading Mahle to the Minnesota Twins. According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Twins are sending prospects Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and pitcher Steve Hajjar to Cincinnati.

LHP Steve Hajjar (No. 18 prospect)

1B/3B Christian Encarnacion-Strand (No. 23 prospect)

Minnesota had a glaring need at starting pitcher heading into the second half of the season. They hold a narrow first place lead over the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox, both of whom are less than a handful of games behind them. Getting one of the top pitchers on the market not named Castillo or Frankie Montas is a good get for the Twins.

This season, Mahle recorded a 4.40 ERA, a 1.246 WHIP, 114 strikeouts, and 39 walks in 104.1 innings of work (19 starts).

Cincinnati, on the other hand, have built up a solid stockpile of prospects. Let’s not forget that they received three of Seattle’s top five prospects. Not to mention that Seattle’s farm system was ranked the second-best in the entire league all season, per MLB Pipeline.

The Twins get a much needed starting pitcher to add to their rotation, while the Reds were able to get three of Minnesota’s top 30 prospects.
