Early offseason MLB rumors hint that these three catchers will very likely wear different uniforms on Opening Day 2023.

Several catchers could be swapping uniforms this offseason. We’re in mid-November and already MLB rumors are naming which backstops could be headed elsewhere.

The catcher spot is an intriguing one around the league. Many teams will “punt” offense at the position in favor of someone who can call a good game. It’s rare that we find anyone close to Mike Piazza squatting behind the dish anymore.

The best catchers these days are the ones who can do a little bit of everything. Ones who can hit, play solid defense, and be more than a number nine hitter are the most desirable. This offseason, several could be wearing a new logo by the time Opening Day 2023 rolls around.

1. MLB rumors: Free agent Willson Contreras makes more sense away from the Cubs

The Chicago Cubs never did manage to find a new home for Willson Contreras during the middle of the 2022 season. One of the most discussed trade candidates over the summer, he stayed put. A small market for the All-Star catcher led to the team holding onto him which might end up as the wiser decision depending on the draft pick they get when he departs.

A return to Chicago does make some sense for Contreras. The Cubs are expected to have a busy offseason. At least one of the major MLB free agent shortstops should end up calling Wrigley Field home for 2023 and beyond.

Already, teams like the Houston Astros have been linked in offseason rumors to have interest in Contreras.

The Astros are hardly the only team that should have an interest in Contreras. The San Francisco Giants, in their quest to add Aaron Judge, might also view him as the necessary offensive upgrade they need. The St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays are two others in need of some more stability behind the plate.

Contreras being a free agent makes him a safe bet to change teams. Two other very good catchers possibly on the move would need to be traded.
