The New York Mets lost out on Carlos Correa, as they had an issue with the star shortstop’s physical. Scott Boras still can’t believe it.
Scott Boras did Steve Cohen a personal favor once Carlos Correa’s deal with the San Francisco Giants fell through, calling him up on vacation to strike a deal with Cohen’s New York Mets.
At that point, Cohen thought he’d just put New York over the top — perhaps making them the favorites in the National League as well. Just a few weeks later, and the Mets found similar issues with Correa’s lower leg, thus forcing them to opt out of their original agreement. Correa has since signed with the Minnesota Twins.
Scott Boras trashes the New York Mets for Carlos Correa
In an interview with Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Boras revealed his true feelings towards the Mets after Correa’s negotiations fell through.
“I don’t understand the Mets,’’ Boras said. “I gave them all of the information. We had them talk to four doctors. They knew the issue the Giants had. And yet, they still call the same doctor the Giants used for his opinion. There was no new information. So why negotiate a contract if you were going to rely on the same doctor?”
Given the size of Boras’s client base, free agency could prove difficult for the Mets in the near future. Trust was broken from Boras’s perspective.
“It was different with the Giants because a doctor had an opinion they didn’t know about. But the Mets had notice of this. They knew the opinion of the Giants. So why did you negotiate when you know this thing in advance?”
Using the same doctor as the Giants seems like an oversight by New York’s front office. Either that, or they never had any intention of signing Correa from the jump.
The Mets deserve some criticism here, if only because they knew what they were getting themselves into, and still balked. Now, Correa is a Twin, and he can put this mess behind him.
