Mike Clevinger’s warm-up song choice was a bad look for White Sox

White Sox starter Mike Clevinger, who previously faced an MLB investigation for domestic violence, warmed up in Chicago to ‘Gold Digger’ by Kanye West.

The mother of Mike Clevinger’s child alleged that the White Sox pitcher abused her and their child physically and emotionally. An MLB investigation did not turn up sufficient evidence to suspend Clevinger, who signed a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox this past offseason.

Clevinger pitched in Baltimore against the Orioles on Friday night. Prior to taking the mound, Clevinger’s warm-up song of choice was reportedly ‘Gold Digger’ by Kanye West, which sent a not-so-subliminal message to the audience.

There’s always the chance that Clevinger’ warm-up song of choice was a coincidence, or perhaps he was paying homage to Chicago’s own in Kanye West. At the very least, the theme of this song was lost in translation.

White Sox: Mike Clevinger’s warm-up song concerns fans

Despite allegations of domestic violence against him this past offseason, Clevinger was not suspended by MLB, but did agree to enter a join treatment board.

“The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has completed its investigation into allegations against Chicago White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger. The comprehensive investigation included interviews of more than 15 individuals, in addition to Mr. Clevinger and the complainant, as well as a review of available documents, such as thousands of electronic communication records. The Office of the Commissioner has closed this investigation and, barring the receipt of any new information or evidence, the Office of the Commissioner will not be imposing discipline on Mr. Clevinger in connection with these allegations.”

Clevinger released a statement as well through the MLBPA at the time:

“I am pleased that Major League Baseball has concluded its investigation. I had nothing to hide and cooperated fully with MLB.  This situation has been stressful for my family, and I thank them for their strength and support.  I asked everyone not to rush to judgment until MLB’s investigation was concluded, and I appreciate everyone who had faith in me, including the White Sox organization and my teammates.  I am looking forward to the 2023 season and helping the White Sox win a championship this year.”

It’s unclear if ‘Gold Digger’ was Clevinger’s song of choice, or a tune the Sox chose for him. It’s likely we’ll learn more about it postgame.
