The latest news on three massive contract extensions, most recently Pablo Lopez, and a win-win trade between the Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins.

In-season contract extensions have typically not been common in major-league baseball. Yet it has been one of the biggest talking points of the 2023 MLB regular season, with Ian Happ signing an extension with the Chicago Cubs, Logan Webb signing an extension with the San Francisco Giants, and now Pablo Lopez signing an extension with the Minnesota Twins.

There are other talks going on throughout the league, with one being between outfielder Bryan Reynolds and the Pittsburgh Pirates. It remains unclear where talks stand, with key issues such as an opt-out clause holding up the two sides from agreeing to a long-term pact.

But one deal that did get done, the Twins’ extension with Lopez, is the latest sign that the trade that sent Lopez and prospects to Minnesota in exchange for Luis Arraez was a win-win for both sides.
