Injuries are nothing to laugh at, but this one is a little funny. San Francisco Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani went five innings yesterday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two batters and was lifted after allowing three straight hits to begin the sixth inning.
But it’s not DeSclafani’s stat line that is gaining attention after San Francisco’s 7-2 loss at the hands of the D-Backs on Saturday. But rather, it’s the odd reason for DeSclafani’s premature exit.

The right-hander threw just 77 pitches, but after a single, double, and another single to begin the sixth inning, Giants manager Gabe Kapler came out the mound and lifted his starter.
Kapler’s quick hook wasn’t necessarily due to performance, but rather due to an apparent injury that he had suffered a few weeks ago. No, it wasn’t a strained right elbow or even something as simple as cramps.
According to MLB.com’s Maria I. Guardado, DeSclafani dropped a piano bench on his toe a few weeks ago. Apparently, it was the big toe on his left foot. DeSclafani was playing piano with his son and suffered the injury while trying to help his son off the piano bench. You can’t make this stuff up.
This sounds like something straight out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. For those who are 25 years old or under, that was a television program we all watched on Saturday mornings as kids.
Anthony DeSclafani is no stranger to injuries. The right-hander has suffered through his fair share throughout his career. But this one takes the cake. You have to wonder if Gabe Kapler said, “That’s all, folks!” before turning to his bullpen on Saturday afternoon.
